âAm I being an idiot?â Cindy asked as she suddenly walked into the family room.
Jeremiah had been half asleep on the couch and woke with a start. âWhatâs going on?â he asked.
âShould we have gone over to Geanie and Josephâs?â
He was about to say âyesâ but he paused and looked at her intently. âWhy didnât you want to?â
âI know itâs going to seem stupid, but Iâm tired of being chased out of my house, of feeling like Iâm running away from every little thing.â
âWell, I can understand the sentiment. I mean, why do you think we stay in Israel despite getting constantly bombed and attacked? There is a strong desire to stay in your home and not let fear of what others might do drive you out. On the other hand, the things that have sent us over to Joseph and Geanieâs before arenât âlittleâ things. Thereâs a time to stand your ground and thereâs a time to take cover.â
âWhich one is this?â she asked.
âYou tell me.â
âWhich would you do?â
âIf it was just me, Iâd stay. Given that itâs no longer just me, I think we should go. No need to take unnecessary risks. Particularly before weâve had a chance to go on our honeymoon,â he said, ending with a smirk.
She picked a pillow up off a chair and threw it at him.
He made a tsking sound at her as he batted away the pillow. âSee, thatâs unsafe, too.â
He saw the corners of her mouth twitch up slightly like she was trying to hold back a smile. He was glad as it had been his intent to put her at ease.
âAre you suggesting that we shouldnât do anything even remotely dangerous until after weâveâ¦â she trailed off suggestively.
âThatâs exactly what Iâm saying. No head injuries caused by flying pillows.â
âNo missing body parts,â she said pointedly looking at his hand.
âNo trips into the wilderness with your brother.â
âNo playdates with the C.I.A.â
âNo hunting serial killers,â he countered.
âNo rendezvous with the Mossad.â
She was edging steadily closer to him as she spoke and he eyed her like a predator watching his prey.
âNo dart games,â he said.
âNo terrorists.â
âNo poker games.â
âNo international art thieves,â she said.
âNo stolen diamonds.â
âOr dogs.â
âOr microchips.â
âOrâ-
At last she was close enough that he pounced. He leapt off the couch in one smooth motion and scooped her up into his arms. She squealed in surprise and he carried her to the bedroom where he dropped her unceremoniously on the bed before retreating to the doorway.
âNo sneaking up on ex-assassins in the middle of the night when theyâre sleeping on your couch,â he said.
She gave him a pouty face. âBoo! No fun.â She grabbed a pillow from her bed and hurled it in his direction. He jumped into the hallway and laughed as he walked back to the family room.
